Sciences Po Lille is happy to welcome Xavier Landes for a class on “Current Issues and Further Questions: Philosophy and Society”, which will be taught from December 4th!
The course Current Issues and Further Questions: Philosophy and Society will be devoted to the ethical and political questions related to climate engineering. The topic of climate manipulation through carbon dioxide removal or solar radiation management has been rising over the last two decades. The reason is the apparent failure of states to coordinate to sufficiently cut carbon emissions. Such failure threatens to send the climate on a dangerous and unpredictable path during this century. As a result, scientists have been exploring the possibility to either capture carbon and store it, for instance in the deep geological layers, or enhance Earth’s reflectivity for reducing global temperatures. Both kinds of interventions generate technical, but also economic, political, and moral issues. The course offers to introduce to such issues.
