Welcome to professor HEINRICH HARTMANN!

Sciences Po Lille is happy to welcome Professor Heinrich Hartmann, from Université de Basle, Suisse for a class on “Population-The emergence of a political issue and the historicity of a scientific concept over the 20th century".

Heinrich Hartmann - Is working in the field of European history from the later 19th century to the 20th century. He has been doing research on a broad spectrum of topics from the history of coporate capitalism to the history of the social sciences and of rural development and modernization policies. Most recently he published a book on the history of military statistics and population discourses in pre WW1 Europe (MIT press 2019) and has an upcoming book on the history of population regulation in rural development programs in Turkey (Campus April 2020). His work relates the circulation of ideas and scientific paradigms across borders to certain social milieus and networks. This leads him to a critical appreciation of the notion of expert knowledge which is often understood as a key to the development of modern societies.
