The coloured gesso on the linen will work out well and give you that extra absorbency you were after. If working with an oil gesso it can take a few days to dry depending on thickness of application, acrylic gesso should dry within the hour. You can also buy premixed black gesso, coloured gesso and clear gesso. Wait for it to dry, and then paint on a slightly thicker coat. Sorry this is a little confusing for me.
